Cornerstone x Solbam

Cornerstone is located at the corner of 15th Street and coast blvd in Del Mar, San Diego. Since it is located close to the beach front, parks and the ocean create an excellent view for the guests.

As you drive into Cornerstone, you’ll see retail stores and a parking area on the left.

The EV parking zone has a small garden in the center for visitors to relax under the tree and retail stores for the shoppers.

All four retail stores are built with metal studs and polycarbonate panels for large windows.

Electrify America and Duke Energy source our complimentary EV station.

Electrify America is currently the fastest commercial EV charging station in the US. They are known for using 100% renewable energy to charge vehicles, and their energy source is Duke Energy.

At Cornerstone, there are four retail stores, and these are the selected brands. All brands were chosen based on their level of sustainability: materials sourcing, making process, waste control, and transportation.

We are inside of one of the retail stores. Each retail stores have window panels tilted in different arrangements, and this is to circulate visitors throughout the retail area in a smoother way.

Instead of driving into the EV parking zone, if you drive around it, you will reach the valet area for Solbam.

The main Solbam building is built with steel and Manchurian walnut wood slat panels, and the 1/4 staircase structure is made with steel and polycarbonate panels.

For Solbam standing at the beachfront, considering the weather and the size of the building, the building has steel studs. With that, we’ve got dens glass on each side of the wall as a mid-layer for moisture prevention.

At Cornerstone, there are three major areas to look for regarding materiality.

Solbam, the 1F dining has an earthy environment. Earthy is formed through natural materials.

2F, to give more focus on the chef and the view out the windows, toned down, less natural but more man-made materials are used.

The dining area is on the top, the hidden kitchen is on the left, the entrance is on the center right where you drop off your car, and the stairs and elevator are at the bottom right corner.

1F dining area, walls are made with reclaimed wood.

The dining tables are all on different elevations; some have single platforms, and some have double platforms.

All tables are at a ground seating level except for the bar tables.

Different plants are planted to give a more natural feel and work as a privacy wall between tables.

1F has transom windows, so the earthy environment remains even during the day with minimal lighting.

The color palette shows where each color is used in this space.

The 1/4 bam, a small section of the building where the staircases and the elevator is located, well expresses the co-existence of nature and man-made.

2F has more man-made materials.

Stone, steel walls on the back side, and large windows around the show kitchen.

The show kitchen is the main event at Solbam.

The chef is in the center. He will go through the ingredients gathered in the morning, perform cooking, and explain each dish while plating. Simultaneously, the servers will deliver food to the guest from the helper’s kitchen for the guests to savor.

From the chef’s table, all seating is set up in a stadium seating configuration. So even the people sitting all the way at the back have a clear view of the chef’s table.

For Solbam, various brands were used to furnish the restaurant. Korean artisans made plates and cutlery. All kitchen appliances are sourced by Gaggenau, doors by Rimadesio, and tables and chairs from various European designers.

On the back side of Solbam is the outdoor lounge area for guests to relax and enjoy the mesmerizing view of the ocean.

Cornerstone is not only a galleria but is a place where it fulfills the need of the people visiting or in the area while exposing people to the natural beauty of Del Mar.
